Roger Clemens Joins the 3,000 Strikeout Club

On July 5, 1998, Roger Clemens of the Toronto Blue Jays struck out Tampa Bay Devil Rays outfielder Randy Winn in the third inning to record his 3,000th career strikeout, becoming the 11th pitcher in major league history to reach the milestone. The SkyDome crowd rose to its feet as Winn swung through strike three and Clemens pumped his fist on the mound.

Clemens had entered the game needing five strikeouts to reach the mark. He struck out Quinton McCracken and Wade Boggs in the first inning, then got Mike DiFelice and Miguel Cairo in the third before Winn became number 3,000. The methodical pace was typical of Clemens, who had built his career on power and precision from his earliest days with the Boston Red Sox.

The milestone came in Clemens's 15th major league season. He had debuted with Boston in 1984 and risen to stardom with his record-setting 20-strikeout game against the Seattle Mariners on April 29, 1986. He repeated the feat 10 years later, striking out 20 Detroit Tigers on September 18, 1996. His years with the Red Sox produced three Cy Young Awards, and his move to Toronto in 1997 had rejuvenated his career. He won the pitching Triple Crown in both of his Toronto seasons, leading the American League in wins, ERA, and strikeouts in 1997 and 1998.

At the time of the milestone, Nolan Ryan's record of 5,714 career strikeouts stood far in the distance, as it does for every pitcher. Behind Ryan, the 3,000-strikeout club included Steve Carlton, Gaylord Perry, Tom Seaver, and Bert Blyleven among others. Clemens would eventually finish his career with 4,672 strikeouts, third all-time behind Ryan and Randy Johnson.

The strikeout of Winn was one data point in a career defined by sustained dominance across four decades of professional baseball.
